The Red Hills of Uncha Mountain Red Hills Provincial Park were identified in planning documents as having an issue of aspen trees encroaching on at-risk grasslands and scrub/steppe ecosystems due to a lack of fire. The fire history of a adjacent old Douglas-fir stand was investigated to determine the fire history of the area. Only one fire from 1912 was found in the scars of trees that were alive as far back as 1776. This indicated that fire was not as frequent on the landscape as previously thought, requiring as re-examination of the ecosystem restoration needs of the ecosystems in the area.
